The Five Classical Actions

Panchakarma — five paths to a cleared system

What it is

Panchakarma is Ayurveda's foundational purification system: five distinct procedures, each targeting a different channel of the body, used individually or in sequence to remove accumulated imbalance at its root rather than manage it at the surface. At Anzee Ayurveda in Wayanad, every protocol below is preceded by a personal consultation with our resident Vaidyas, adapted to your unique Prakriti (constitution), and delivered in a calm, clinically supervised setting using traditional herbal preparations sourced and prepared in-house.

01 Vamanam

Vamanam

Therapeutic Emesis

Vamanam is a physician-supervised cleansing procedure designed to clear excess Kapha dosha that accumulates in the stomach, chest and respiratory tract. In the days leading up to the procedure, the body is prepared through internal oleation (Snehapana) with medicated ghee and external Swedana (herbal steam therapy), which helps loosen deep-seated toxins so they can be released efficiently and safely under close clinical observation.

  • Recommended for chronic cough, asthma and sinus congestion
  • Supports seasonal allergy and skin conditions linked to Kapha
  • Restores appetite, lightness and mental clarity post-therapy

02 Virechanam

Virechanam

Therapeutic Purgation

Virechanam uses carefully selected medicated herbal preparations to gently draw excess Pitta dosha out of the body through the liver, gallbladder and small intestine. Like Vamanam, it is preceded by a preparatory phase of oleation and sudation to mobilise deep toxins into the digestive tract, after which the cleansing preparation clears them out over a controlled, supervised window. It is one of the most widely used Panchakarma therapies for Pitta-related conditions.

  • Effective for chronic acidity, IBS and digestive inflammation
  • Widely used for psoriasis, eczema and other Pitta-driven skin issues
  • Helps cool excess body heat, irritability and hyperacidity

03 Vasti

Vasti

Medicated Enema Therapy

Considered the cornerstone of the entire Panchakarma system, Vasti involves the careful administration of herbal decoctions or medicated oils through the colon to pacify Vata — the subtle force that governs all movement in the body, from joint mobility to nerve function. Formulations are custom-blended to the individual, and treatment may extend over several days depending on the condition being addressed, making it one of the most versatile and frequently prescribed therapies in classical Ayurveda.

  • Highly effective for arthritis, joint stiffness and lower back pain
  • Supports nerve-related disorders, sciatica and muscular tension
  • Improves mobility, sleep quality and overall nervous system balance

04 Nasyam

Nasyam

Nasal Administration

Nasyam involves the administration of herbal oils, medicated powders or plant extracts through the nostrils — regarded in Ayurvedic physiology as the most direct access point to the head, neck and sensory organs. The therapy is typically preceded by a gentle facial massage and mild fomentation to open the nasal passages, allowing the medication to act efficiently on the tissues above the collarbone, an area classical texts describe as governed largely by Kapha and Prana.

  • Relieves sinusitis, chronic congestion and recurring headaches
  • Improves voice, vision and disorders of the sensory organs
  • Eases mental fatigue, migraines and disturbed sleep patterns

05 Raktha Mokshanam

Raktha Mokshanam

Blood Purification Therapy

The most specialised of the five classical actions, Raktha Mokshanam is applied selectively to purify circulating blood in cases where impurities have accumulated to the point of causing localised inflammation or chronic skin disease. Performed only under strict clinical supervision by our senior Vaidyas after a thorough assessment, it is reserved for conditions where the other four Panchakarma therapies alone are unlikely to bring full resolution.

  • Used for chronic, non-responsive skin conditions and localised inflammation
  • Supports conditions linked to impure or stagnant blood quality
  • Administered only after detailed clinical evaluation by a Vaidya

A holistic healing experience that purifies the body, strengthens the immune system, and restores balance and overall well-being for the mind, body, and spirit

Panchakarma, the ultimate mind-body-spirit healing experience, offers a profound purification process that strengthens the immune system, restores balance, and reconnects you with your inner self. Rooted in the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda, Panchakarma promotes healing, rejuvenation, and detoxification, addressing the body’s need to remove toxins (ama) and imbalances caused by poor lifestyle practices, diet, and stress. The word “Panchakarma” translates to “five actions” or “five treatments,” a series of therapeutic procedures designed to cleanse the body and eliminate harmful substances through the natural elimination organs. By removing excess doshas, correcting imbalances, and purifying deep tissues, Panchakarma restores the body’s innate healing capacity and improves overall health. Each Panchakarma therapy is personalized to your unique constitutional type, dosha balance, age, digestive capacity, and immune condition.
Three Stages Are As Follows

The Panchakarma procedure is carefully structured into three stages, each playing a crucial role in achieving optimal results. Adhering to all three stages is essential for ensuring a thorough and effective detoxification process.

  1. Purva Karma (Pre-operative procedure)
  2. Pradhan Karma (Main procedure)
  3. Paschat Karma (Post-operative care)

At Anzee Ayurveda, we follow a comprehensive three-stage process of Panchakarma therapy designed to purify the body, restore balance, and promote holistic well-being. Each stage is personalized to align with your unique health needs and constitutional type, ensuring optimal results for both physical and mental rejuvenation.

A. Purvakarmas (Preparatory Procedures)

The first stage of Panchakarma prepares the body for the main therapeutic treatments by softening tissues and liquefying accumulated toxins. This stage involves the following key treatments: Pachan Karma: This procedure involves the use of digestive herbs and fasting to optimize digestion and prepare the body to process the medicated ghee used in subsequent therapies. Snehan Karma: Medicated ghee is gradually introduced to the patient, which helps to liquefy fat-soluble toxins deep within the tissues, making them ready for elimination. Swedan Karma: Full-body steam baths are given to open the body’s channels and facilitate the movement of toxins from the tissues to the digestive system.

B. Pradhan Karma (Main Procedure)

The core phase of Panchakarma therapy involves the actual cleansing of toxins and imbalances that were liquefied during the preparatory treatments. This phase consists of several procedures tailored to address specific doshic imbalances:

  1. Vaman (Therapeutic Vomiting): A therapeutic treatment designed to expel excess Kapha dosha, Vaman is particularly beneficial for conditions like asthma, sinusitis, psoriasis, and cough.
  2. Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation): A procedure aimed at eliminating excess Pitta dosha, effective for treating skin conditions, acne, hyperacidity, and mental stress.
  3. Vasti (Enema Therapy): Vasti is used to treat Vata imbalances and involves two types:
    • Sneha Vasti (Oil Enema): This therapy nourishes tissues and removes toxins from the colon, ideal for conditions like constipation, paralysis, and lower back pain.
    • Niruha Vasti (Cleansing Enema): A more intensive therapy for deeper cleansing, targeting conditions like arthritis, sciatica, and neurological disorders.
  4. Nasya (Nasal Therapy): This therapy clears and strengthens the nasal passages, beneficial for treating headaches, sinusitis, allergies, and facial paralysis.
  5. Raktamokshan (Blood Purification): This therapeutic procedure uses leeches or suction cups to cleanse the blood, particularly useful for treating eczema, psoriasis, and inflammatory conditions.
C. Paschat Karma (Post-Treatment Care)

The final stage of Panchakarma focuses on rejuvenation and healing, ensuring that the body remains balanced after the purification process. This includes tailored lifestyle adjustments, dietary recommendations, and specialized therapies to restore vitality:

  • Sansarjan Karma: A carefully structured food therapy post-detox to gently reintroduce nutrients to the body.
  • Rasayan Adi Prayogam (Rejuvenating Therapy): This therapy aims to revitalize the body and mind, enhancing longevity and well-being through the use of potent herbal formulations.
  • Shaman Chikitsa: Pacification therapy using herbs and lifestyle management to maintain balance and ensure the body’s continued healing process.
